Virus or malware on the systems can be very annoying and frustrating at the same time. They can cause your system to clog and perform slowly. Virus and malware can equally destroy very important documents or files on your system. You just have to get rid of them.
A virus or malware is a piece or pieces of unwanted programs that affects your computer. These malware are persistent and hard to remove.
In this article, there are steps itemized to help you remove those viruses and malware. These steps will work for the most common ones.
1. Turn-off your system. The shut-down and restart will help to remove simple malware. If that does not work, do a hard reset on your computer system. To do that:
2. Hold the power button on your computer until it shuts down. You now need to restart the system without letting the malware start. To do that, you need to go to ‘Safe Mode’. To achieve that:
Hold the ‘FA’ key at the top of the keyboard just before Windows tries to boot. When the computer starts, it first starts POST.
The computer is looking for all the available hardware. That, is physical parts in the computer that enables it function. During that time, you will see some white writings on the screen, the computer is looking for the hard drive for the Operating System. Hit the ‘FA’ key multiple times to make it respond. If you succeeded, the screen will look like the picture below.
If you did not succeed, Windows will load and you will have to restart all over.
When you succeeded to get the recovery mode screen, select the ‘Recovery Mode with Networking’ using the arrow key and press enter.
Now Windows will load the minimum drivers so that it can restart. This means 99% of the time, the virus or malware will not load with the system. You will notice the screen resolution is poor because the computer is using the most basic drivers at this stage.
Once Windows has finished loading, at the top you will see a ‘Safe Mode’ written. That is OK.
Connect to the internet and open a browser window. Go to google.com and search for Malwarebytes.
Click and open the site.
Click on ‘Products’ and choose ‘Download free Version’. This is a good anti-malware program. It is updated often and it is reliable. Click on ‘Download’.
Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install.
Once installed, open the program and let it update to its latest version.
When fully updated open the program, select ‘Perform Quick Scan’ and scan the system. the scan will take a while, depending on how good your computer is.
Once it finds an infected file, it will appear on the screen. When the scan is done, follow the on-screen instruction to remove the malware that was found.
This process is expected to remove the malware or at least crippled it.
When done, shut down the laptop computer and start it normal. You will notice that the virus or malware will no longer be there.
You need to run an anti-malware scan. You can use yours or I recommend the ‘Microsoft Security Essential’. It is powerful and updated regularly, best of all it is free. You are free to download it. However, make sure to choose the type of Windows your system is running on.
Once the download is done, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
Once installed, choose ‘Quick Scan’ and ‘Scan now’
When fully scanned, you could go back to Malwarebytes and choose ‘Perform Full Scan’ this time. it may take a while due to large files to scan.
Congratulations! You have successfully removed viruses and malware from your system.
Note: If after performing this process and the virus or malware is still there, then you may consider sending your system to a computer professional to handle the rest.
