Adam McKola gives his 7 reasons why Manchester United beat Istanbul Basaksehir 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Stretford Paddock is our go to fan channel for Manchester United fans and they’ve just uploaded a video to outline seven reasons why the Red Devils beat Istanbul last night.

McKola’s list is as follows:

  1. Started off brightly
  2. Bruno masterclass
  3. Rashford ran them ragged
  4. Donny proves his worth
  5. Rode our luck in the 2nd half
  6. Subs make a difference
  7. Istanbul ran out of steam

Started off brightly

Manchester United tend to start games slowly but getting that early goal last night made a huge difference. Bruno Fernandes’ half volley from outside the box was exactly the start we needed and it rattled Istanbul Basaksehir on the night. The game was wrapped up by the time the referee blew his whistle for half-time.

McKola says it felt like watching “vintage United” but we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves before our next test on Sunday against Southampton. We can’t forget how inconsistent this side has been under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and other managers for the record.

Bruno masterclass

Two goals for the Portugal international. He’s the one who makes this team tick and he was incredible last night. At the heart of anything.

Rashford ran them ragged

It wasn’t his best performance in a United shirt but he took his penalty well, but McKola alludes to how he was back running at defenders with pace and provided natural width. Took his penalty very well.

Donny proves his worth

The Dutchman played a deep midfield role but what I loved about his performance is how he requires few touches before picking a pass. United moved through transitions quicker as a result.

Rode our luck in the 2nd half

United were nowhere near as good in the second half but the substitutions are the reason behind that. I’m not criticising the changes Solskjaer made because he used his five substitutions to give players some rest and also took caution with knocks sustained by one or two players. Taking Fernandes off resulted in a drop in tempo, but nobody will complain about that because it was the right time to give him a breather.

The Turkish champions applied pressure late on and scored a great free-kick, with goal-line technology intervening.

Subs make a difference

Mason Greenwood came off the bench and played very well. His assisted Daniel James for the winning goal as the Welsh forward scored his first goal in the Champions League.

Istanbul ran out of steam

Blown away at the start. Never got going until the game was wrapped up.
