Manchester United and Liverpool meet for the second time in the space of a week as they clash in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Their Premier League battle ended 0-0 with the Red Devils then getting the upper hand in the title race following the further midweek fixtures.

Title talk will be put aside for the weekend as attentions turn to the cup game – with commentary of the match live on talkSPORT.

The fixture has plenty of significance for both camps even though it is just the fourth round.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will desperately want to get his hands on his first piece of silverware as United boss to firmly quieten his naysayers.

Jurgen Klopp has historically struggled in the competition but it could be their most realistic chance of getting a trophy this season, assuming they cannot keep pace with the two Manchester clubs and Leicester in the league.

Jurgen Klopp has historically struggled in the competition but it could be their most realistic chance of getting a trophy this season, assuming they cannot keep pace with the two Manchester clubs and Leicester in the league.

Liverpool have also hit something of a rough patch in terms of form. 2021 has started out without a single goal scored in the Premier League and their only victory has come in a 4-1 win over Aston Villa’s kids in the third round of the FA Cup.

Even then they had a bit of a scare in the first half with the youngsters matching the Reds for the first 45 minutes.

Team selection will be interesting and here at talkSPORT.com, we’ve taken a look at how we think they both should line-up.

Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba have been excellent for Man United in recent games and give Solskjaer a good threat going forward.

Bruno Fernandes has dipped over the last couple of fixtures but he’s been their best player over the last 12 months and has to play.

Marcus Rashford started on the bench against Fulham and should be fresh – all season he’s look a danger on the left or up top.

Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been impressive at full-back this season and should not be changed.

Pogba has scored two winners for Man United in their last three games

Shaw seems to have benefitted from the extra competition of Alex Telles but at the moment is ahead of him.

It is a tough call between Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly to partner Harry Maguire but Lindelof should get the nod if he’s shaken off the nagging back issue.

“Victor will be fine for the weekend,” Solskjaer said. “It was just too quick a turnaround we felt with the travel and with his back.

“I wanted to play Eric (Bailly) today when Victor’s not ready anyway. Now we’ve got four days extra.

“Victor got his treatment (on Wednesday) and a little bit of light training so he should be ready for the weekend.”

Victor Lindelof could return to the United team against Liverpool

Solskjaer added: “I think Aaron’s one of the best one-against-one defensive full-backs in the world.

“I think he’s getting better and better on the ball, doesn’t give the ball away a lot.

“He’s not been asked to venture forward as much as earlier in his career. Last season was a learning one for him.

“We see Luke (Shaw) who’s two or three years older and he’s really hitting good form now. Aaron’s got the time ahead of him and we’ll give him time. In a year or two, you’ll see a top, top full-back there.”

Dean Henderson should also play ahead of David De Gea. If Man United are serious about wanting him to replace the Spaniard in the future then he needs to get experience in games like this.

How Liverpool should line-up against Man United

Liverpool’s team selection will be a tricky one for the weekend with some much needed rotation probably unavailable for Jurgen Klopp.

The front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah has failed to score in more than seven hours of Premier League football.

They are really missing Diogo Jota but Klopp may look to Takumi Minamino to freshen things up in place of Mane.

Thiago has looked excellent at times on the ball in midfield following a difficult start to the season with coronavirus and injury.

Salah and Firmino have both struggled for goals in recent weeks

Klopp’s problems at centre-back persist with Joel Matip still recovering from injury while Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are long-term absentees.

Saying that, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho did an excellent job against United last weekend and there’s no reason why they can’t do the same again.

Questioned by reporters on what will be the biggest factors in determining his starting XI, Klopp replied: “Opposition and competition.

“We want to win the game, it’s clear. It’s a cup game, the game will be decided that night and we want to win the game. That’s it. That’s how we will make the line-up.”
