New West Ham United signing Jesse Lingard is running out of time to prove to his parent club Manchester United he is worthy of a new contract.
That is according to former England defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Irons confirmed the England international had moved to the London Stadium until the end of the season.
Asked by Football Insider whether he thought Lingard would be a success in east London, Mills said: “David Moyes knows him from his Manchester United days.
“When he was there Lingard was obviously a lot younger. It’s a big opportunity for Jesse Lingard, I don’t think he walks straight into that West Ham team.
“He’s got to turn up and he’s got to fight for his place.
“That’s not going to be easy because this is a West Ham side who are playing incredibly well at the moment. They’re playing some good stuff, results are really good.
“It’s not going to be an easy one. It’s not like he can turn up and walk straight into that team.

“If he wants another big contract somewhere, on the same money he’s on at Manchester United he’s going to have to perform.
“It’s his last chance in terms of a big move at a big club. If it goes wrong here he maybe has to look at a step-down. Maybe the lower half of the Premier League or possibly even abroad and maybe not on the wages he’s on at the moment.”
Lingard has not featured in the Premier League all season for Man Utd but they triggered an extension in his contract in December that will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of next season.
