Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Cristiano Ronaldo is back on Manchester United’s transfer radar, it seems. It’s been claimed the Glazers have held talks about a possible return for the Juventus star, whose time at the Allianz Stadium appears to be winding down. So it’s now time to take a look back at what the Portugal international has said about a potential return over the years, in comments that will put his old side on red alert.

Let’s work backwards.

Three years ago, when asked about potentially returning to United ahead of a Champions League tie, Ronaldo admitted ‘nothing was impossible’.

“Nothing is impossible," he said.

In another interview, published around the same time, Ronaldo also praised United fans for not booing him - unlike Real Madrid’s supporters.

"I don’t like it and it’s not normal that they whistle you in your own stadium. I just don’t like it,” he said.

"It’s not correct. And when you are on a difficult run that is when you need extra support from outside not less. Sometimes we don’t have it.

"I spent a lot of years at Manchester United and it never happened to me. Not even once. Maybe England is a case apart – the mentality is different."

Even further back, in 2014, Ronaldo admitted he ‘loved’ United.

And, more intriguingly, he also conceded he dreamed of playing for the club again.

“I love Manchester,” he said.

“Everyone knows that. Manchester is in my heart.

“The supporters are amazing and I wish I can come back one day.”

Louis van Gaal was in charge of United at that time but, instead of going after Ronaldo, he focused on other signings instead.

He wanted Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels.

But, instead of signing the German quartet, the Dutchman ended up settling for the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw instead.

Also in 2014, Ronaldo admitted he was still contact with United - but was happy at Real Madrid at that time.

“Some players I am still in contact with because when I was there I created a good relationship with everybody, not just the players, all the staff around,” he said.

“And it was like my second family there too, so I’ll not forget that the people treat me well. I’ll not forget.

“I love Manchester, to be back, I never know, you never know.

“Of course I’m happy at Real Madrid, it’s my home, it’s my club but Manchester treat me unbelievable so we never know.”

Over the years, Ronaldo hasn’t hid his admiration for United.

And a blockbuster deal could now be about to happen.

The Glazers have reportedly talked with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, about a Hollywood transfer deal at the end of the campaign.

And Ronaldo already appears to have said goodbye to Juventus, dropping a hint on social media that he’d achieved everything he wanted to during his three years in Italy.

“The life and career of any top player are made of ups and downs,” he said.

“Year after year, we face fantastic teams, with extraordinary players and ambitious goals, so we always have to give our best to keep ourselves at excellence levels.

“This year we couldn’t win Serie A, congratulations to Inter for the well deserved title.

“However, I have to value everything that we achieved this season at Juventus, both in collective and individual terms. The Italian Super Cup, the Italian Cup and the Serie A Top Scorer trophy fill me with happiness, mainly due to the difficulty they carry with them, in a country where nothing is easy to win.

“With these achievements, I reached a goal that I had set myself since the first day I arrived in Italy: to win the Championship, the Cup and the Super Cup, and also to be Best Player and Top Scorer in this great football country filled with tremendous players, giant clubs and a very own football culture.

“I’ve already said that I don’t chase records, records chase me.

“For those who don't understand what I mean by this, it’s very simple: football is a collective game, but it is through individual overcoming that we help our teams achieve their goals.

“It is always looking for more and more on the field, working more and more off the field, that records eventually emerge and collective titles become inevitable, some being the natural consequence of the other.

“So, I'm very proud with this fact that has been widely replicated in recent days: Champion in England, Spain and Italy; Cup winner in England, Spain and Italy; Super Cup winner in England, Spain and Italy; Best Player in England, Spain and Italy; Best Scorer in England, Spain and Italy; Over 100 goals for a club in England, Spain and Italy.

“Nothing compares to the feeling of knowing that I’ve left my mark in the countries where I’ve played, and that I gave joy to the fans of the clubs I represented.

“This is what I work for, this is what moves me and this is what I’ll always keep chasing for until the last day.

“Thanks to everyone who took part in this journey! We stand together!”
