Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen for Manchester United to recruit Harry Kane from Tottenham this summer.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly pushing the club's hierarchy to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane in the upcoming summer transfer window

Kane on Sunday ended the 2019-20 Premier League season as the player with the most goals and also the most assists as he beat Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to the Golden Boot, the third of his career.

The 27-year-old scored 23 times and laid on 14 goals for his team-mates as he ended the season across all competitions with 50 direct goal involvements in just 49 matches despite the north Londoners' struggles.

England captain Kane wants to quit Spurs in the summer though having grown tired of failing to compete for major honours, with Tottenham finding themselves stuck outside of the Champions League again next year.

Man United, Manchester City and Chelsea are the three most viable destinations for Kane with all three clubs looking to sign a new No 9 in the summer.

Kane is as good as they get in that department but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will be loathed to losing his talismanic forward, particularly to a direct rival.

Yet The Times say United boss Solskjaer is eager for Kane to be brought to Old Trafford and is making his feelings clear to those above him including owners the Glazers that he wants a deal done.

Speaking last week, the Norwegian coach declared that just because veteran frontman Edinson Cavani has signed a new one-year contract does not mean another striker won't be signed.

He said: "We're looking at the squad and I hope we're going to strengthen with two or three players we definitely need to challenge higher up in the table.

"We're still too far behind to think it’s just going to come by itself.

"I'm not saying that if Edi [Cavani] stays that means someone else in a forward position won't come in. No, of course, I can't [rule out signing a new striker].

"Yes, Edinson signed but how many good strikers have we had at this club? I can't say we're not signing a striker.

"We're working towards a better squad. We're top three two years on the bounce but we are nowhere where we want to be.

"So, hopefully, we end up with a stronger squad when we start next season and be more consistent and challenge the ones in front of us."

Whether United can deliver on Solskjaer's wish is another matter entirely given the difficulties they have had negotiating with Spurs power broker Levy previously.

But it appears the Red Devils will at least make a real go at trying to sign the England international, who would represent a real statement signing as United aim for a first title since 2013 next year.

United meanwhile concluded their most recent domestic campaign on Sunday with a 2-1 win away at Wolves.

Victory at Molineux meant that the Red Devils went the entire top-flight season unbeaten on the road.

Solskjaer said: "It was about time we did! We haven't done it before, so what an achievement by all the players, they have been excellent.

"I knew that we did put this record on the line by making all the changes, but we had to.

"One because we believed in these players, and two because the other players have played so much this season and needed an energy boost for Wednesday.

"We played this in the spirit of Man United and Sir Alex [Ferguson] and Sir Matt [Busby], definitely. You have to take risks, but we believed in them."

Solskjaer's charges will finish their season on Wednesday night against Villarreal in the Europa League final in Poland, Gdansk as they look to lift the club's first trophy since May 2017.
