Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Manchester United should aim to land Marquinhos in the summer transfer window.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has urged the Red Devils to pursue a move for Paris Saint-Germain skipper Marquinhos as a matter of priority in the summer transfer window. United are likely to be in the market for defensive reinforcements ahead of next season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said to be keen on finding the ideal partner for Harry Maguire.
Victor Lindelof has tightened his grip on the starting spot as of late, but the 26-year-old has struggled to play his best football at times.

Meanwhile, Eric Bailly has played just nine Premier League matches during an injury-hit campaign and looks set to continue in his bit-part role for the foreseeable future.

A number of potential targets have been mentioned in connection with the Red Devils in recent months, including Villarreal defender Pau Torres and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid.

The latter is said to have been on United's radar for some time, and has been tipped to finally join the Old Trafford club this summer with his Real contract set to expire at the end of next season.

However, Ferdinand has suggested that his former employers should abandon their pursuit of the Frenchman and beat Chelsea to the signature of Marquinhos instead.

"If any team is in the market for a centre-back, right now, out of the top teams, with the finances, Marquinhos is the only place I’m going," Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.

"Big-game player. Every big game you see that guy play he turns up. Fit as you like, quick, robust, hardened, battle-hardened, understands the big-game environments.

"Top, top player, great attitude, leader, got it all. If I’m looking for a centre-back of experience who can take me to the next level, he’s the one I’m going for."

Marquinhos has emerged as a standout player for PSG in recent years, taking over the captaincy from Thiago Silva after the veteran defender joined Chelsea last summer.

The former has helped to keep 14 clean sheets from 23 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, although PSG look set to finish behind champions-elect Lille in this season's title race.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel worked with Marquinhos during his time in charge of the French heavyweights, and is said to be a keen admirer of his former player.

Like United, the Blues are expected to be targeting new additions at the back this summer, with Fikayo Tomori reportedly looking to join AC Milan on a permanent basis after impressing at the Serie A club on loan.

The Sunday World has claimed that Tuchel has already asked club chiefs to sign Marquinhos ahead of next season, suggesting that United could be in for a tough battle if they decide to mount a summer approach.
Despite the speculation around the 26-year-old's future, he is contracted to PSG until 2024 and it remains to be seen whether he would be willing to take on a new challenge at this time.

The Brazil international previously suggested that he could end up spending the rest of his playing days in the French capital.

"Could I finish my career here? Yes," Marquinhos told AFP back in 2019.

"If all this continues in a positive way, if I continue to be happy here with the project, the targets that we want to go for, and the admiration of the fans, why not?"
